New head takes over at TV school

Ms Matthews, who is the former deputy headteacher of Handsworth Grange Community Sports College in Sheffield, will take up the position from June 1.

But she is already a familiar face in the corridors.

Last term, she spent time at the Academy to familiarise herself with staff and pupils.

She takes over from Johnny Mitchell, who will be leaving the Academy on Friday to continue his career at The Co-operative Academy in Leeds.

The Academy shot to fame in 2013 appearing on Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire, which followed the lives of pupils and staff, bringing hard-hitting story lines, tears and lots of laughter.

Its eight episodes went on to win Best Documentary Series at the National Television Awards.

Ms Matthews said: “I am extremely excited at the prospect of working with such a dedicated team of staff and governors who are so passionate about driving the Academy forward to reach our ultimate ensuring outstanding provision for all students.”

“I look forward to developing positive relationships with students, parents and carers as well as the wider community in order to ensure all students fulfil their potential whilst with us at Thornhill Community Academy.”

Ms Matthews joined Handsworth Grange Academy in 2006 and played a pivotal role in moving the school from Special Measures to an Ofsted Good rating in less than four years.

Ms Matthews said: “I am excited at the prospect of leading Thornhill Community Academy and relish the challenges ahead.”
