New Chief Constable starts work

Mr Gilmore said he was both privileged and excited to be returning to lead the force, where he previously served as Assistant Chief Constable in 2010/11.

“This is a huge force with a huge reputation and I feel privileged and proud to have been appointed, ” said Mr Gilmore.

“The police service is going through massive change. But I want my officers and staff to remain focused on the task in hand – preventing and reducing crime and making a difference in communities.”

Mr Gilmore takes over from Sir Normon Bettison, who handed in his resignation in October in the wake of revelations over the Hillsborough disaster.

Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, Mark Burns-Williamson said: “I know he has an unwavering commitment to policing and public service and will provide strong and effective day to day operational leadership for the force. These are challenging times, not least because of the unfair Government cuts across our county and the massive financial savings the force has to find, but I am confident Mark will work in partnership and bring the best out of his workforce.”
