Muslim community helps flood victims

The Indian Muslim Welfare Society, based in Batley, collected the cash after watching the devastation in the south of England on the news.

Villages were isolated, homes evacuated and much of the farming community was in disarray, as the bad weather caused torrential damage.

A delegation from The IMWS visited Thorney and Burrowbridge last Saturday to hand over a the money to the Somerset community.

Chairman of IMWS Mohamed Mulla said: “The impact of the floods in Somerset has been devastating and it has left people with damages of colossal proportion. Many people have suffered physical and psychological trauma as a result of the flooding.

“We all felt that we as good citizens should do something to help our flood stricken communities.”

After the floods hit, the IMWS worked tirelessly fundraising for the victims.

A team of volunteers representing various mosques visited Somerset to see first hand how the floods had devastated the communities.

Bishop of Taunton Revd Peter Maurice, who organised the IMWS’ visit, said: “This is such a wonderful gesture of solidarity from one community to another. It is heartening to find that rural communities in distress in Somerset are getting support from Muslim communities.”

Chief Executive of Somerset Community Foundation Justin Sergeant said: “The generous donation by the Indian Muslim Welfare Society will be put to good use in helping to rebuild lives and livelihoods damaged by the flooding here in Somerset.

It is a kind gesture from the Muslim community and we are very grateful for their contribution.”
