The Wallace Hartley bandstand in Longcauseway Memorial Gardens was named after the conductor of the stricken ship Titanic’s band, who lived in Dewsbury before setting sail.

A bandstand was originally due to be built after his death in 1912, but never went ahead. Now thanks to the work of Dewsbury Regeneration Board, and funding from Dewsbury Area Committee, the memorial is complete.

Coun Paul Kane, Chair of Dewsbury Regeneration Board, said: “I was intrigued by the story of Wallace Hartley and felt that it was only right that he should be honoured in the town where he lived.

“It is there for everyone to use and will be a community asset for Dewsbury.”

He added: “I would like to thank Coun Darren O’Donovan for all his hard work in organising the family event which will take place to launch the new bandstand.”

The entertainment will take place at the bandstand from 12pm-3pm and includes: Eric the Viaduct, Alex Quinn and the Man in the Street; Marc and Abi and more.
