A politician has pledged her support for a new civic event which will celebrate the best of volunteering across North Kirklees.
Batley and Spen’s Labour MP will be involved in and sponsor an award at the Love Thy Neighbour bash organised by the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Paul Kane.
Held at Batley Town Hall on Saturday, February 13 to coincide closely with Valentine’s Day, the event will celebrate unpaid grassroots volunteers who have made a difference in Dewsbury, Spen, Mirfield, Batley and the surrounding areas.
Jo Cox MP said: “This will be a wonderful event and a perfect way to celebrate the work volunteers do in our local community.
“We have a rich and benevolent spirit when it comes to volunteering, helping others and acts of kindness.
“That is absolutely something we should celebrate and I hope everyone will give some thought to nominating an unsung hero who they know.”
Coun Kane is working in partnership with the Batley Business Association to organise the event.
Three awards which will be handed out by him include volunteer of the year, the best event he has attended and the best ‘Friends Of’ group. Other categories are being finalised.
To nominate somebody, email firstname.lastname@example.org or send a letter to The Mayor’s Office, Town Hall, Ramsden Street, Huddersfield, HD1 2TA. Entries should be in by Sunday, January 17.
