MP Simon claims £469 for energy

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Simon Reevell claimed £469 in energy expenses over 12 months for his second home in London.

The figures came to light after an investigation by a national newspaper published on Sunday.

The claims do not break any parliamentary rules as MPs based outside London can claim for living costs for their second home. But it’s come as four of the so-called ‘big six’ energy companies have announced price hikes as winter sets in.

Mr Reevell said he disagreed with MPs who claimed for their constituency home as opposed to their London home. He said: “My house in Kirkburton eats up a lot more energy. It would be wrong for me to claim there as I would live there anyway.”

Mr Reevell said he had recently changed his energy tariff in Kirkburton to get a better to deal and encourage his constituents to do the same.
