Mirfield Town Council gives £2,500 grant to Friends of St Mary’s Church

COUNCILLORS have awarded £2,500 to help restore the grounds of an historic church.

The Friends of St Mary’s Church applied to Mirfield Town Council for funding to support its work.

The group hopes to rebuild a Grade II listed wall in Dunbottle Lane and improve access to the historic site.

The grant approved at a meeting on Tuesday will help cover the cost of submitting planning applications. It will also be spent on illustration boards to be installed around the church, explaining its history.

Councillors also approved a motion which backed residents’ efforts to enhance the grounds of St Mary’s.

The Friends of St Mary’s Church plans to bid for a further £35,000 to £40,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
