Mirfield supermarket plans go on show to public

There will be only 25 extra cars per hour at the busiest times, St James Securities managing director Oliver Quarmby said.

The firm has so far refused to confirm which supermarket chain wants to occupy the site, but has said it is one of the ‘big four’.

But the company’s identity will be revealed by the time the planning application is submitted, which is expected to be during the summer.

At a press briefing yesterday, Mr Quarmby explained that a new set of traffic lights and pedestrian crossing facilities would be installed at the Station Road access.

Mirfield mayor Vivien Lees-Hamilton had raised concerns about traffic in the area as Huddersfield Road is heavily congested already.

In response, Mr Quarmby said the lights in Huddersfield Road would be re-phased to help with the problem. The footpaths on Station Road would also be widened.

He said: “This is principally a service for people in Mirfield. We won’t all of a sudden have lots of people from Huddersfield and Dewsbury coming in.”

The new supermarket will be approximately 30,000sq ft in total. There will also be an unmanned petrol station.
There will be 190 car parking spaces including 11 accessible spaces, two car charging spaces, eight customer cycle spaces, eight staff cycle spaces and two motorbike spaces. The car park will have a three hour limit. There will also be a pick-up point for online orders.

The plans go on show to the public today (Friday) at Trinity Methodist community rooms in Huddersfield Road, 11.30am-7.30pm.
