Mirfield Show grant slashed as council commitments stretch budget

Mirfield Show has had its town council funding cut by 80 per cent as councillors face tough decisions on how to invest their budget.

Councillors had originally hoped to give as much as £5,000 towards the show, which brings thousands of visitors to the town.

But since pledging to take over the running of Mirfield’s public toilets, the council has had to review its finances.

Mirfield mayor Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton said: “It has impacted massively.

“We’ve thought long and hard and looked at the budget in great detail.”

She said the council agreed to give £1,000 towards the 2013 show at its last meeting.

“I know that every single councillor would have liked to have given more,” she added.

Mirfield Show chairwoman Karen Bullivant thanked councillors for their continued support.

She said: “We were very hopeful that they might find a little bit more, but we’re grateful for the £1,000 and will put it to good use.”

Meanwhile, Mirfield Old People’s Welfare Trust received £150 towards a concert by Hepworth Brass Band.

A grant of £500 was given to Upper Hopton Community Association towards the resurfacing of the driveway at Croft House – a project expected to cost around £4,000.
