Mirfield Show enjoys another record-breaking year

The sun shone for what is firmly established as the biggest summer event in Mirfield’s calendar, which this year had more stalls and exhibitions than ever.

Crowds flocked to see helicopters land and llamas put through an obstacle course, courtesy of the Black Rock Llama Agility Display Team.

There were also animal, vegetable and craft classes, dancers and bands.

The event was opened by Mirfield ambassador Lt Col David Eastman MBE, who spoke about his time serving in Afghanistan and said it was an honour to open the show.

He said: “I was really surprised at the number of people that turned up. The whole idea of the community getting together is just fantastic.

“The thing that struck me was the level of support for the military. I was stopped by so many people throughout the day who asked me about my experiences and said positive things in support of our soldiers.”

It was a successful day for the Mayor of Mirfield Coun Pat Sutcliffe, who raised £1,400 on her stall. The donations were matched by Barclays bank in Mirfield.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Simon Reevell also had a stall. He said: “The organisers were very sensible in booking good weather and by keeping the admission prices low to encourage people to come, so I’m a big fan.”

Richard Hartley, publicity officer for Mirfield Show, said: “It makes it all worthwhile when so many people turn up. I’m so pleased that the people and the attractions came out to support us.”

Show chairman Karen Bullivant said: “We have had an absolutely brilliant day.

“We were very pleased with all our attractions, the weather was just perfect and the huge crowd of people who came seemed to be really enjoying themselves. It was a great family day out, which is what we hoped to achieve. A fitting result for a lot of hard work over the year by our dedicated committee.”
