Mirfield schoolboy’s Olympic torch gift

A 12-year-old boy has had an early Christmas present with the offer of being an Olympic torch-bearer.

Harry Crowther was at school yesterday when his mum, Sharron, received an email with the conditional offer. Sharron called school with the news and Harry told her: “I am shaking and my heart is beating.”

But he told the Reporter he would be ‘carrying on as normal’ until he and Castle Hall Academy headteacher Andy Pugh told his classmates at the end of the school day.

Harry’s name was in the first batch of people to receive conditional offers to be a torch-bearer next year. The offers will be confirmed in March after those offered a place have accepted and any background checks needed have been done.

The flame will pass through Dewsbury next June, but Harry doesn’t yet know exactly where or when he will carry it.
