Mirfield plans Armed Forces Day celebrations

MIRFIELD is getting ready to honour the men and women of our armed services.

Armed Forces Day is on Saturday June 30 and it will be marked with a series of events in the town.

The celebrations will start at 10.45am with a short service at the war memorial in Ings Grove Park, Huddersfield Road.

There will then be a parade through Mirfield town centre led by Wakefield City Pipe Band and a band of drummers from 868 (Mirfield) Squadron Air Training Corps.

Serving and former servicemen and women will join the parade, which will end at the showground in Huddersfield Road.

At the Old Colonial in Dunbottle Lane, there will be a display of classic cars and military vehicles.

A towpath tidy event will also be held that day.

Volunteers who want to help clear Mirfield’s waterways should meet at Shepley Bridge Marina at 10am.

Plans are also under way to hold a special Veterans Day in Mirfield during the summer, which will pay tribute to the men and women who have fought for their country or completed national service.

It is hoped that veterans who have not yet received their official veterans badges can be presented with them on the day.

One of the organisers, Tim Wood, is applying for the badges and wants any veteran who has not received theirs to call him on 01924 496929.
