Mirfield air cadets vote for Simon

Air cadets have picked one of their members to win an award for the way he has overcome adversity to excel as a member of their group.

Cadet Simon Hawkins, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder, was awarded the Gillian Lockwood Trophy at a presentation evening held by 868 (Mirfield) Squadron Air cadets.

The trophy was given to the squadron by the late Ms Lockwood, a former mayoress and deputy mayoress of Mirfield.

Each year, the air cadets choose one of their number who they think is the most worthy recipient and this time they picked Simon.

His mum Carol said: “I think it’s absolutely brilliant.

“I think it shows Simon’s attitude towards what he does and it obviously shines through, because so many other cadets also saw that in him and voted for him.”
