Miracle man to walk out at Old Trafford

A rugby league player who was told he may never walk again after breaking his neck will stroll across the pitch at the Super League Grand Final on Saturday.

Ryan Glynn suffered severe spinal injuries in an accident while playing for the Shawcross Sharks in March 2013 and had two strokes in hospital as doctors treated him in the aftermath.

Despite early fears that he would be confined to a wheelchair, Ryan’s gradual recovery over two and a half years has defied the odds and has culminated in him completing a marathon cross country bike ride this week with an entourage of people who have known injury and illness themselves.

Setting off from Hull at the start of the week, Ryan’s journey ends on Saturday when he will be presented to the crowd at Old Trafford before the Grand Final between Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors.

He is doing it all in aid of the Steve Prescott Foundation, named after the widely respected rugby league player who succumbed to a terminal illness in November 2013.

Writing on his JustGiving page, Ryan, who also turned out for the Dewsbury Rams in his career, said: “This challenge is all about bringing people together, something that Steve Prescott was the master of!

“On this challenge we have injured RL players whose careers have been cut short due to serious injuries, a badly injured ex solider, a comedian, businessmen, a doctor and a student - so a very mixed bag.

“Steve never asked anybody to join him on his immense challenges, but we did so because you couldn’t help but believe in him.”

Ryan was due to arrive at Thornhill Rugby Club on Wednesday evening for a pit stop and refreshment before continuing on with his journey.
