Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust was required by the government to become an elite Foundation Trust by 2014, but admitted last year it could not balance its books in order to meet the deadline.

Government minsters had issued a warning that trusts which failed to meet the deadline faced being broken up or taken over.

But Stephen Eames, interim chief executive of the Trust, said improvements to services and finances over the past year meant Mid Yorkshire was now progressing towards becoming a Foundation Trust.

Mr Eames said: “We are at the start of a journey which I’m confident will result in even higher standards of local health care, safety and experience as well as our achievement of Foundation Trust status.”

Mid Yorkshire reported a financial deficit of £21.8m at the end of March, which was less than its forecast deficit of £26m.

The Trust said it was now one of 42 NHS organisations which were aiming to achieve Foundation Trust status by 2016.
