Men jailed after £200k of heroin found in mayonnaise delivery

TWO men have been jailed after a consignment of mayonnaise sent to them from Pakistan turned out to be £200,000 of heroin.

Bilal Suleman and Zaber Khan’s delivery was stopped during a routine search by officers from the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) at Heathrow Airport back in January.

The mayonnaise was destined for Global Foods, based at Unit Four, Lady Ann Mills in Soothill – a unit which was being rented by 22-year-old Suleman.

Officers found two packages of brown powder concealed within the consignment which, tests confirmed, contained a total of 1.31kg of heroin with a 58 per cent purity.

The drugs had a street value of around £200,000 and a wholesale value of between £40,000 and £50,000.

Officers arranged to deliver the shipment to Suleman. As soon as he signed for it they arrested him for conspiring to import controlled drugs into the UK.

Khan, Suleman’s uncle, was later seen on CCTV footage buying a mobile phone which was used to arrange delivery of the package in January.

He was charged with buying a phone, knowing it would be used for the importation of drugs.

Both men pleaded guilty to their charges.

Suleman, of Ellis Street, Bradford, was jailed for four years and eight months after a hearing at Leeds Crown Court last Wednesday

Khan, 35, of Bolton Road, Bradford, was sentenced to two years and eight months.

West Yorkshire Police’s head of regional operations, Det Chf Insp Richard James, said after the hearing: “Today’s result demonstrates what can be achieved in partnership with our colleagues at UKBA, who intercepted the consignments in the first instance.

“The controlled delivery of the package that my officers later engaged in highlights just how far we will go to disrupt the importation of drugs and bring those involved to justice.

“We are committed to targeting organised criminals in this way in order to make communities safer across Yorkshire and the Humber.”
