Megan is at it again for charity

But inspirational youngster Megan Rodd walked almost 16 miles to raise money for Leeds General Infirmary’s Teenage Cancer Trust charity.

She was joined last Wednesday by classmates Yasmin Oliver and Gwen Martin, from St Ignatius Catholic Primary School in Ossett.

Mum Michelle, of Cliffe Street, Dewsbury, said: “I’m really proud of her because there isn’t anything she won’t do for people.

“After watching Children In Need on television, she was really upset and she said she wanted to help poorly children and that’s where the idea came from.

“The walk took a long time but Megan didn’t want to give in, she didn’t stop even when it got dark.

“When her friends were struggling she said to them ‘when you’re aching think about all the poorly children’ and it helped spur them on.

“She wanted to organise the walk and a bike-ride and she even used her Christmas money to buy toys and gifts for the charity.”

Megan did eight laps of Pugney’s Country Park in Wakefield before walking from the park to the city’s castle in Sandal – a total of almost 17 miles.

She also took part in a bike-ride fundraiser in Wakefield last Sunday.

She has raised more than £400 for the charity so far.

Leeds Rhinos fan Megan, a former Reporter Series Champion Child, has been fundraising for the Leeds Rugby Foundation since she was five years old.

She has raised a total of £4,000 for the charity through a number of different fundraisers.

Mrs Rodd, 35, said: “It all started when she was five and she saw people raising money with buckets at a Leeds Rhinos rugby match.

“Ever since then there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for people. She just won’t be defeated.”

Megan has held a number of fundraisers to collect money for the Leeds Rugby Foundation.

Megan’s first fundraiser, when she was five-years-old, was a two-mile walk from Leeds Rhinos’ stadium in Headingley to Hyde Park in Leeds.

When she was six, she climbed Ben Nevis in Scotland to raise money for charity.

Last year Megan walked from her home in Dewsbury to the stadium in Headingley.

When she was seven, she climbed Penyghent in the Yorkshire Dales – one of the Three Peaks – twice.

She has raised a total of £4,000 for the charity through her fundraising activities.

Megan is planning to climb Mount Snowden – the Highest mountain in Wales – in May, to raise money for Leeds General Infirmary’s Teenage Cancer Trust charity.
