Medieval festival planned for Woodkirk

Take a trip back hundreds of years next weekend when St Mary’s Church in Woodkirk turns medieval for the day.

The Dewsbury Road church will be holding lots of fun events on Saturday August 16 As part of the Yorkshire Medieval Festival.

Visitors will be able to watch performances of the Medieval Mystery Plays, performed by St Andrew’s drama group - the first performance for over 500 years, which will take place at noon and again at 2pm.

People will be able to read about the Black Canons and their life at Woodkirk, see the Longbow Archer and Hill Top Primary School’s art display and hear resident historians explain the Medieval world, 10am-3pm.

And if that wasn’t enough, there will be lots of laughs as people are put in the stocks ready to be pelted with wet sponges.

There will also be the chance to taste some Medieval food and drink, such as pottage, spelt bread and cheese with barley wine.

Admission for the fun day is free.
