Dewsbury’s ties with a town in Germany were strengthened after the Mayor of Kirklees met with an ambassador from the country.
Coun Paul Kane met with the German Honorary Consul Mark Green this month to discuss how to build on the links between Kirklees and Unna, a north-western district near Dortmund.
The two districts have been twinned since 1967 and a recent exchange with youngsters from Dewsbury Dolphins Swimming Club reaffirmed their bond.
Honorary Consul Mr Green said the links between the two districts was “just as important now” as it was when they first twinned in 1967.
The meeting between the pair took place at Huddersfield Town Hall and also featured representatives from Greenhead college.
Mr Green said: “I offer my wholehearted support to the young Dewbury Dolphin swimmers and to the Greenhead College group, as they seek to build new relationships with schools and voluntary groups in Unna.
“This is just as important now as in 1967.”
He also encouraged businesses in Kirklees to consider sending young apprentices to spend time in Germany.
Coun Kane said: “It was really interesting to discuss the forging of links between our two great countries.”
Dewsbury Dolphins Swimming Club has been involved in the twinning with Unna for more than 30 years. Youngsters from the club have exchanged with TuRa Bergkamen every year since 1983.
