A MASS rally is being held in Mirfield today in protest to plans for a Tesco store in the town.

A newly-formed pressure group has organised the event for 10.30am at the Mirfield showground and urge as many people as possible to turn up.

Objectors fear the impact of a Tesco Express on the site of the former Black Bull pub in the town centre. It is claimed neighbouring independent shops could be forced out of business.

Tesco says the new store would employ local people and ‘contribute to the health and vitality of the town’.

In a war of words, Kirklees Council leader Mehboob Khan has been challenged to attend the rally after he posted Twitter comments in favour of the scheme. Mirfield councillor David Pinder said Coun Khan’s remarks were ‘outrageous’.
