Mass disturbance as violence breaks out after five hurt by car

Violence broke out after five people were injured in a collision with a car.

Police said a silver Vauxhall Insignia collided with a group of people on Charles Street, Dewsbury, at about 10.30pm on Thursday.

After the incident, violence broke out between a group of around 150 people.

Police said some people became aggressive but the crowd was dispersed with the help of community leaders.

A 17-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent and remains in custody.

Insp Paula Booth said: “We would like to thank the local community for supporting the police at this time and helping us to do our job.

“This was a serious incident and we understand people’s concerns but some of the behaviour officers had to deal with last night was unacceptable.

“Officers patrolled the area throughout the night and will continue to patrol the area to provide reassurance and talk to witnesses.”

One person ,who was involved in the collision, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
