Marie Curie Cancer Care thanks dedicated Dewsbury volunteers

Now the commitment they have shown as fundraisers for Marie Curie Cancer Care has been recognised.

Mrs Dawson was presented with her bronze medal for five years’ service, while Mrs Stott received her silver medal marking 10 years.

Mrs Stott, 59, of Heath Close, Chickenley, started volunteering after her mum was cared for by staff at one of the charity’s hospices.

“The nurses were really caring,” she said. “I wanted to pay back what they had given to my mum. From that I took up the fundraising.

“I enjoy it. It’s not just a case of collecting, but listening to people about the problems they have had and how they got over it.”

Community fundraiser Alyx Elliott said: “Margaret and Sheila are a fantastic example of people who have dedicated so many years to volunteering. Without them we simply couldn’t give the level of home nursing we do across West Yorkshire.”

And the charity hopes the pair’s dedication will inspire other to get involved.

Mrs Elliott said: “We’ve got so many things people can do. Some people hold their own events at work or come to help in our office.

“In Dewsbury we’re also looking at setting up a fundraising group. They would host collections and their own events, and liaise with schools and businesses to get them involved.”
