The 17-year-old had been waiting at a bus stop in Birkenshaw on Wednesday evening when a saloon car pulled up alongside her.

A man driving the car leant across to the passenger window and twice told her to get in.

When the girl ignored him, he got out of the car and grabbed her right arm.

He tried to pull her into the car, but she kicked him in the shin and ran off when he loosened his grip.

The girl then ran to a nearby home to raise the alarm.

Police today (Friday) issued a description of the car and man they want to trace.

The car was a silver, five-door saloon with beads hanging from the interior mirror.

Its driver was described as a man in his late 20s to 30 years old, 5ft 8in to 5ft 9in tall, of medium build.

He wore a black baseball cap and a black, shiny bomber jacket.

Det Insp Andy Parr said they wanted to hear from anyone who saw the incident in Bradford Road near the junction with North View at around 8.20pm.

He also asked people to think about whether they had seen the same car in the area on other evenings.

“We’d rather receive calls that prove to be negative than not receive calls at all,” he said.
