Man pulled from River Calder in dramatic rescue

FIREFIGHTERS mounted a dramatic river rescue when a man was spotted in the River Calder.

The 52-year-old was in the river near Sainsbury’s in Railway Street, Dewsbury, on Sunday morning.

He was dragged downstream towards Sands Lane playing fields and firefighters pulled him, unconscious, from the water on the Savile Town side at around 10.15am.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was called to lift the Dewsbury man over the river and on to the playing fields.

He was taken to Dewsbury and District Hospital where he is still being treated.
