Man dies after being hit by train at Mirfield station

A man has died after being hit by a train at Mirfield rail station last night.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was struck after he fell from the platform at 8.37pm.

Trains were cancelled for over two hours in between Huddersfield, Leeds and Wakefield Westgate and a replacement bus service was put in place to transport hundreds of rail travellers.

The train, from Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle, does not stop at the station.

British Transport Police and emergency services were called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Train services were reinstated alongside the bus service around midnight.

British Transport Police sergeant, Roger Jones, said: “We can confirm that a male was struck by a train at 8.37pm and that, unfortunately, he didn’t survive his injuries.

“We are not treating this as suspicious and we have informed the coroner but are not able to release further details as some members of the family have not yet been informed.”
