Police responded to a 999 call from a resident saying a man was trying to break down a gate post with a lump hammer in Coal Pit Lane, Carlinghow, Batley, on Tuesday.

They attended the scene where the 20-year-old suspect allegedly cut a padlock off a gate to fields owned by Kirklees Council.

Several vehicles and people were present and were obstructive to officers, according to the Batley and Spen Neighbourhood Policing Team.

The situation was quickly brought under control by police.

The man arrested for the criminal damage, who is from the Bradford area, has been charged to appear at Kirklees Courts on June 25.
