M1 motorway to be closed

The M1 motorway near Wakefield will be closed as works to upgrade the carriageway into a ‘smart motorway’ continue.

The Highways Agency is carrying out work to upgrade the stretch of road between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse to ease congestion.

The scheme, which is due to be completed by September, will see hard shoulders become permanent lanes during peak times.

As part of the works, the southbound carriageway will be closed between junctions 40 and 39 tonight, tomorrow, Sunday and Tuesday (April 24, 25, 26 and 28).

It will also be closed between junctions 41 and 40 on Monday, April 27.

The northbound carriageway will be closed between junctions 41 and 42 on Wednesday, April 29 and between junctions 40 and 41 on Thursday.

All closures will be in place from 8pm until 6am.
