Luxury home plan for Whitley approved

COUNCILLORS have approved a plan to turn a disused water treatment works into a luxury home.

The building in Scopsley Lane in Whitley will be converted into a three-storey house with a sauna, gym and swimming pool.

Two letters and a 57-signature petition were submitted in opposition to the plan.

Speaking on behalf of residents, Khizar Iqbal told Kirklees Council’s Heavy Woollen planning sub-committee that the development would not be in keeping with the surrounding area.

“This building is right in the heart of the green belt,” he said.

“The structure of the building is just a concrete block. It’s not in keeping either with the green belt or the existing residential area.”

But councillors followed officers’ recommendation to approve the development.

Coun Steve Hall (Lab, Heckmondwike) said: “I think it’s a great concept. I don’t see what impact it will have on the green belt because the building is already there.”
