Love is... sharing your special spud

You might not think a potato would make a particularly romantic gift.

But when one rolled out of Janet Baker’s shopping bag recently, it seemed like the perfect early Valentine’s Day present for her husband.

She bought a bag of potatoes from the Co-op in Mirfield, and found that one spud had a perfectly symmetrical heart-shaped mark on it.

Mrs Baker said: “I got it out of the bag and thought, ‘I can’t peel that one!’ At first I thought somebody had marked it on purpose at the packing place, because it was so symmetrical. When I looked closer it was just a scab.”

Her husband, Hugh, is the vicar of Mirfield. Mrs Baker said he was ‘delighted’ with his Valentine’s gift, which now sits on their mantelpiece at home in Vicarage Meadow.

She said: “It might be somebody trying to tell us to not spend a fortune on gifts and save our money.

“I might plant it in the garden and see if some heart-shaped potatoes grow!”
