The Liversedge and Gomersal Community First Panel has already approved grants worth more than £33,000 over the past three years.

And the group is keen to take its spending up to £50,000 before the end of the year.

“It’s a very simple application process,” said panel chair Susan Bell Proctor.

“Everything is done online and the form filling is kept to a minimum. We have grants available of up to £2,500 per project.”

The group applying must have funding matching the amount that they are applying for but this can be made up of volunteer time, donated materials and gifts in kind as well as money.

The scheme to support voluntary groups is paid for by the Communities Department of government and is overseen and administered by local people.

Deputy chair of the group, John Appleyard said he has been surprised by the variety of applications.

He said: “We have funded a really diverse and interesting number of schemes; playgroups, grow-your-own gardening, a literary festival, healthy living classes, safe cycling, a community library and much more.

“This year we are contributing to the commemoration of the First World War in Gomersal, a project which I am told may be featured on the BBC.”

In addition to this, the panel is currently considering a bid to fund a Luddite heritage weekend, to highlight Liversedge’s history and build on previous celebrations.
