LET’S DO IT FOR DADDY

A HEARTBROKEN mum who will be spending her first Christmas without her partner is opening her cafe on December 25 to feed the homeless.

Sharon McNulty’s long-term partner Craig died in an accident in August.

But instead of spending Christmas Day at home without him she will open Grilled And Filtered to help others.

“It wouldn’t feel right to celebrate,” she said.

“I can’t imagine anything worse than sitting down on Christmas Day without him, so I’d rather think that I was making somebody else happy.”

The plan was the couple’s daughter’s idea.

Mrs McNulty, of Bronte Close, Staincliffe, said: “Craig and I had said for the last five years that we were going to forget this Christmas meal malarkey and feed everybody else for a change. It was Gracie who said, ‘I don’t want my dinner this year – let’s do this for daddy’.”

Mrs McNulty, 46, hopes to feed around 50 homeless people when she opens her cafe between 11.30am and 2.30pm on Christmas Day.

She will be helped by Gracie, 10, and her three other children, Kirstie, Thomas and James. People in need will be directed to Grilled And Filtered in Bradford Road, Dewsbury, by staff at Batley Drop-In.

Mrs McNulty hopes businesses and individuals will donate food or money, and she already £50 has been given by customers.

Mr McNulty, 38, was a joiner and roofer and was well known for always helping others with their DIY problems.

His family has raised almost £1,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance – his favourite charity – in his memory.

Although Mr McNulty was not married to Mrs McNulty, he changed his surname so could share it with her and her children.

“He would have loved what we are doing on Christmas Day,” Mrs McNulty said. “He would be in his element.
