The statistics from Jobcentre Plus in Kirklees combine figures for the Dewsbury and Batley and Spen constituencies.

As of July, there were 2,978 people aged 16-64 on the Jobseeker’s Allowance register. This is a 27 per cent drop since the same time a year ago, and a 43 per cent drop since 2010, according to the department.

Among the 18-24 age group, there were 731 people signed up to the benefit. This is reportedly a 41 per cent reduction since the year before and a 57 per cent drop since 2010.

Kirklees’ Jobcentre Plus operations manager Jo Ledgard has said that there are around 100 upcoming temporary jobs with Dewsbury firm UK Greetings, in collaboration with Staffline recruitment agency.

Young people (18-24) who are on Jobseeker’s Allowance can be signed up to a course to gain a level one employability skills certificate.

They will then get help from the job centre to be placed into roles as labellers, pickers and packers – but there is no guarantee of a position.
