Enthusiastic fundraisers poured into John Smith’s Stadium in Huddersfield to for a Zumba warm-up and 10-mile walk in memory of family and friends they had lost.

Despite the drizzle, spirits were high on Saturday night.

Hospice fundraiser Emily Kennedy, who organised this year’s event, said: “The walkers who turn up to walk en masse every year really make this event special.

“The Midnight Memory Walk is one of the hospice’s major events and to see so many people enjoying the atmosphere and sharing stories of loved ones is amazing.

“It is fantastic to see so many people turn out to support their local hospice and raise thousands of pounds in sponsorship.”

The hospice – one of the Reporter Series Fund’s chosen charities – supports people across our district who are suffering from life-limiting illnesses such as cancer and heart failure.

It also offers support and counselling to families and carers.

Together the walkers raised a total of £71,000 for the charity’s work.

The walk, now in its seventh year, attracts supporters from across the country.

This year 868 participants from as far away as Australia took part in the fundraiser.

Emily said: “We would like to express our thanks to everyone has given up their time to come down and support us at this unique event.

“We could not do this without our amazing supporters, whether that is our corporate sponsors, marshals, staff or wonderful volunteers.”

The 2013 walk was supported by AM Recruitment and Sygenta, with help from the John Smith’s Stadium, The Venue in Halifax and Raynet.
