The trial is part of the council's aim in reducing waste and tackling the climate emergency.

The composters on offer are different from those you may have seen before as they offer the ability to dispose of much more than vegetables and garden waste.

Councillor Rob Walker Cabinet Member for Environment said: “This scheme will help the council learn more about the types of composter available on the market by understanding how they work in real-life situations.

"Manufacturer’s guides can only tell us so much, we want to know the good, the bad and the ugly reality behind these innovative composting systems.

"We know composting isn’t for everyone, but we hope these new designs will make them accessible to a wider audience.

"This is just one of a range of initiatives we are working on to make it easier to reduce waste and recycle more over the next few years."

The council has 250 of each of the following composters to give away: Green Cones, Green Johannas, Wormeries, and Bokashi bins.

Each system is very different in both how it looks and the way it works. The council is giving away the composters in return for feedback on how effective they are in real-life situations.

Residents will be able to apply for the composter trial from 20 January until the 3 February. Then 1000 people will be selected at random to receive one. The lucky recipients will be asked to complete two short surveys about their experience; one after 3 months, then again after 6 months.

Should the trial be successful, the council will be looking at offering a subsidised scheme so even more people can benefit.

In addition to the 1000 residents, four members of the compost crew will testing the new systems out and vlogging about their experiences.
