Khan under fire over decision to resign

Kirklees Council leader Mehboob Khan faced a barrage of questions over his imminent departure at a full council meeting on Wednesday.

Four of the eight questions posed to the leader and cabinet members related to his decision to take a job at the Local Government Association in London.

Coun Phil Scott (Almondbury, Lib Dem) asked Coun Khan if he would resign as chairman of the West Yorkshire Fire Authority. He said he would have to consult with that body before making a decision.

Coun Nicola Turner (Colne Valley, Lib Dem) asked Coun Khan to explain why he had taken the decision to step down. He defended his record as leader, before adding: “I now believe it is the right time for this council to have a change of leadership and it will bring a different focus.”

Coun Khan was also unable to say whether he will stay on as a Kirklees councillor.

Coun Cahal Burke said Coun Khan had “let the people of Kirklees down” by walking away from his job while Kirklees has no planning framework in place.
