Judges block terror suspect’s extradition

Haroon Rashid Aswat, originally from Batley Carr, was arrested in 2005 following a request for his arrest and extradition from American authorities.

Mr Aswat, a British citizen, allegedly tried to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon with radical cleric Abu Hamza.

He has been detained at Broadmoor high security psychiatric hospital since 2008 after being transferred from prison.

In October 2012, terror suspects Abu Hamza, Babar Ahman, Syed Talha Ahsan, Adel Abdul Bary and Khaled al-Fawwaz were extradited to the US.

But Mr Aswat said the conditions in an American jail would exacerbate his paranoid schizophrenia.

On Tuesday the ECHR voted unanimously that extradition would breach Mr Aswat’s human rights and would result in a significant deterioration in his physical and mental health.

The ECHR’s judgement will not become final for three months.
