Jail for burglar

A DRUG user who went on a crime spree after he was kicked out by his mother has been jailed.

Scott Ormsby, 22, was locked up on Monday for stealing a car from outside a house in West Bank, Batley.

Leeds Crown Court heard how the owner of the car was woken up at 4am by the sound of her dog barking.

Dale Brook, prosecuting, said the woman looked outside and saw her Toyota Yaris was gone. She also found a window on her house had been forced open and her car key had been stolen.

Police were called when ambulance service staff saw a man get out of the car outside a house in Navigation Gardens, Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury.

Officers forced entry to the house and arrested Ormsby. They found the stolen car key inside a child’s toy.

Michael Greenhalgh, mitigating, said Ormsby had pleaded guilty to burglary and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent at the earliest opportunity.

He said: “He has problems with drink and the use of drugs and that’s really what led him into this sort of offending.”

Sentencing, Recorder Richard Mansell QC said Ormsby had been ‘sofa-surfing’ after his mother had kicked him out over his drug use.

Ormsby, of Knowles Hill Road, Dewsbury, was jailed for two years for burglary and three months for taking the Toyota Yaris, to run concurrently. He was also given a six month driving ban.

Mr Recorder Mansell said: “Try and get yourself sorted out and when you come out don’t just surf around taking drink and drugs and sleeping on people’s sofas.”
