The Old Turk, a favourite with the rock and alternative crowd in Dewsbury and beyond, will open its doors again on Friday October 31.

It’s being taken over by Beerhouses, the owners of four other real ale pubs including the nearby West Riding Refreshment Rooms.

The pub was listed for sale during summer 2012 to the alarm of regulars.

Now Joel Graham, currently a bar supervisor at the West Riding, will be taking over as bar manager at the Old Turk.

It’s a project that’s close to his heart as he used to drink there himself.

“I’m really looking forward to welcoming people back,” said Joel. “There’s been a lot of excitement about it.

“It’s a different venue for Dewsbury. You see so many pubs closing now – it’s good to see one reopening and not turning into a supermarket!”

Punters can expect a similar vibe to the old pub, with classic rock playing through the PA system at weekends. And there will be a new focus on live music.

A stage has been built inside and Joel, a bassist for Huddersfield thrash metal band Evile, hopes to welcome touring bands in the new year.

“We’re really open to ideas,” he added. “The stage could be used for jazz performances, stand-up comedy – bring it all on.”

Beerhouses has rapidly expanded in recent years, opening four pubs in the past five years. The West Riding celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this year.
