‘Inadequate’ Earlsheaton Technology College put in special measures

An Ofsted report published today was highly critical of Earlsheaton Technology College’s performance.

It said the school in Old Bank Road, Dewsbury, had weak teaching, GCSE results were too low and pupils’ behaviour was poor.

In a letter to students, inspector Jan Bennett said: “We found that although there is some outstanding teaching in geography, history and religious education, overall the teaching is not good enough to make sure that all students make the progress they should.

“The GCSE results for year 11 students last year were well below average and the amount of progress that you are making during your time at the school is too slow.

“In addition, many of you and your parents and carers expressed concerns about behaviour. The leaders and managers of the school are not bringing about the necessary improvements quickly enough and consequently, the school has been placed in ‘special measures’.”

The school was marked in four categories – achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and leadership and management – and was given the lowest grade of ‘inadequate’ in all.

In October last year five education experts were called in by the government to replace the school’s governing body.

The experts, appointed by the Department Of Education are responsible for making sure the school continues to improve.

It followed Ofsted inspections in November 2010 and June 2011.
