The race, now in its third year, attracted a record 218 runners compared to last year’s 116.

Those taking part were encouraged to wear the traditional Yorkshire cap while travelling round the scenic five-mile route, which ended at the Leggers Inn at Savile Town Wharf.

Tony, 62, said: “It was absolutely brilliant. We couldn’t believe it. I don’t know where the numbers came from. The whole thing was great.

People really put a lot of effort into the flat caps. Many thanks to all those who turned out, the marshalls and the runners.”

The overall winner was Spenborough and District Athletics Club member Kevin Ogden, who finished in 29 minutes, 11 seconds – two minutes faster than last year.

The fastest female runner was Faye Beckett from Wakefield Harriers, who completed the course in 33 minutes, 33 seconds.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance is the Reporter Series’ chosen charity for 2014. News editor Georgina Morris represented the papers for the third year running, finishing in 49 minutes, 47 seconds.

Forty six of those who took part were not attached to a specific running group, a leap from the typical 10-15 in previous years. Winner of the best flap cap competition was Jonny Cartwright, of the Stadium Runners, whose hat featured sheep and Yorkshire Tea bags.
