Plans for the redevelopment of the Dewsbury Rams stadium and surrounding area have been met with “overwhelming support” from the public, according to the developer.

Three consultation exercises took place this week. Harron Homes, which wants to build 203 homes next to the Tetley’s stadium, will also provide a full size floodlit all-weather sports pitch and two floodlit all weather multi use games area for the Rams. They will also cover the cost of a new 334 space car park to provide more space for the Rams to grow in future.

The total cost is estimated to be £1.6m. Rams chairman Mark Sawyer said last week that the plans would secure the future of the club for “many, many years.”

A spokesman for leaseholders Stirling Scotfield said: “The public consultation has now been completed and we have received overwhelming support from those who have attend the drop in sessions for the development proposals.

“We now intend to move forward with Harron Homes and the Dewsbury Rams RLFC to submit a formal planning application in the next month.

“We are aware that there are some residents who remain unhappy with the development proposals and we have agreed to meet with them to listen to their concerns and to see what further mitigation measures, if any, can be taken to reduce further, any impact the development proposals may have on them.”

The number of proposed houses has already dropped from 234 to 203 after the initial consultation. The distance between the planned homes and those on Bywell Close has also been increased, and there will be more trees to provide screening.
