Housing plans causes controversy in village

In last week’s Express, we reported how that councillors Martyn Ward, Jean Askew and Allan Garbutt were worried about plans put forward by Barratt homes to build the houses on the land just off Rose Avenue and Common Lane due to flooding issues.

This has sparked concerns for residents who have been left fearing for their safety if the plans are given the go-ahead by Wakefield Council.

Nearby residents are opposing the plans and have signed a petition they will hand over to the council.

Home owners are also worried that they will lose the picturesque view to the rear of their homes.

John and Anne Taylor Stevens have lived at their home on Rose Avenue for 38 years, and the postcard view on the back of their property will be lost if the homes are built.

Mrs Taylor Stevens, 69, has lived at her home on Rose Avenue for 38 years.

She said, “As soon as we saw the house and saw that view we knew we had to have it. It is stunning. But I am really worried that it will be replaced by bricks if these plans aren’t stopped.”

She said she had to pay an extra £1,000 for the house in comparison to the homes across the road because the house backed on to the open space.

Mr Stevens, 63, said that the homes will also destroy the wildlife that roams on the piece of land.

He said: “There are rabbits and hares but if these houses go ahead there will be none left which will be a real shame.

“They shouldn’t be allowed to build there.”
