Homely makeover gets club’s praise

Colours being applied to rooms at Soothill Working Men’s Club have got members talking – especially since the sole decorator is a woman.

The warm plaudits which have gushed from drinkers, bingo players and callers at the club in Soothill Lane, Batley, have pleased painter Marina Hobson, who is the wife of president Chris.

Marina, 60, took the job on after quotations for having professionals carry out the work ran into many thousands of pounds.

“I’ve always carried out decorations at any house I’ve lived in so in some senses this was just another, but much bigger, job.

“But the way people have reacted to my choice of colours, designed to make the club more cosy and relaxing, has just delighted me,” she said.

Marina, of Hey Beck Lane, is one of a six-strong committee which handles the running of the club, formed in 1913.

It moved to its present site in 1919 and celebrated its centenary two years ago. Chris said: “I think she’s done a fantastic job and I’m sure all the members will agree.”
