A re-enactment of the Luddite uprising was staged at the pub where they plotted their attacks 202 years ago.
Spen Valley Civic Society organised a celebration day at the Shears Inn, Liversedge, to commemorate the day the Luddites attacked new mill machinery which was putting their livelihoods at risk.
Eric Rowley, from the group, said: “A frame representing the new machinery was erected in the garden and, ably assisted by Luddite enthusiasts the Huddersfield Fraid Not Society, the frame was smashed to ground with sledgehammers, cheered on by the crowd.

Hide Ad“The event was followed by a lively gathering in the Shears, and a very hearty meal was provided free by landlord Paul, who was presented with a picture of the Shears by the president of Spen Valley Civic Society, Max Rathmell.”
