He said: “We’re only a few weeks into the new course but it’s going great so far.

“The students are engaged and the quality of the work is amazing, even better than last year.

“The year elevens in particular are outstanding.”

The GCSE in photography is offered to 14 to 16 year olds in local schools.

The school pupils take a course of study in years 10 and 11 that is not available in their formal curriculum.

Students from St John Fisher Catholic High, Spen Valley Sports College and Westborough High all completed the course in June this year.

Mr Boothroyd said: “We use industry-standard equiptment and make it as much like professional practice as possible.

“We’re teaching the students as though they are full-time adults.

“This course has really developed over the past four or five years and has been highly praised by Edexcel as one of the best GCSE photography courses that they moderated.”

He said many pupils went on to study photography at a higher level.
