Help available for abuse victims

Kirklees Council has warned many families hit problems during this time of year, heavy drinking and money worries can contribute to a seasonal rise in domestic abuse.

One former victim of abuse Gill, who has had her name changed to protect her identity, and her two children aged 15 and nine, were made homeless due to domestic abuse, and suffered personal abuse and threats of violence from her partner.

After she fled her home, council staff from social care and housing helped her with the emergency support as well and helped her find work.

She said: “I put off leaving him for years, but with the help I got, I eventually plucked up the courage to go.

“My children both feel much happier. It was a relief knowing that people who cared were there if you needed help. I urge anyone in a similar situation to pick up the phone and take the first step”.

Coun Jean Calvert, Kirklees Council cabinet member for communities, said: “We want victims to know that they do not have to suffer in silence or behind closed doors. Problems can be tackled if they are reported.”
