The RSPCA has reminded dog-owners of their role in keeping their pets safe throughout the summer months. The animal welfare charity received around 350 calls for help last weekend, as concerned callers found hundreds of animals trapped in hot cars.

RSPCA North regional superintendent Martin Marsh said: “Leaving a window open simply isn’t enough. Leaving a dog in a hot car has the same kind of effect as putting it in a microwave. They are literally cooked alive in what is a horrendous death.”

Yorkshire Water said that it is often the chilling temperatures and strong water currents beneath the surface that can lead to fatalities, as swimmers are pulled into the supply network after their muscles go into cramp.

Matt Thompson of Yorkshire Water said: “We would always encourage our customers to be water-wise and only use what they need, regardless of the time of year.”
