Harry Crowther’s dad John runs marathon for Progeria Family Circle

The father of Olympic torchbearer Harry Crowther has run 29 miles in a day to show support for a charity dedicated to his son’s rare condition.

John Crowther, 43, got in his running gear to tackle one of 10 marathons taking place over 10 days to raise money for Progeria Family Circle.

Although he planned on running just six miles of the route, John ended up going the whole hog and ran all the way from his home in Beech Grove, Mirfield, to the Ladybower reservoir near Sheffield.

John was joined by Charlotte Okines and Becky Reid, who are taking on the incredible challenge of running all 10 of the planned marathons, and friend Tim Reid.

Charlotte is the sister of 14-year-old Hayley Okines, a good friend of Harry’s and also sufferer of the rare ageing disease.

Both Harry and Hayley waved off the four-strong team as they set off on their seven-hour journey through Yorkshire on Thursday last week.

Despite battling against thick snow, strong winds and steep hills, John and the others arrived at Ladybower reservoir safe and sound, albeit a little sunburnt, at around 4.30pm.

Sharron Crowther, John’s wife and mum to 13-year-old Harry, said: “Harry’s dead proud of his dad, and thinks the whole thing is great.

“He just can’t believe people would do all this for him and his friends.”

But although John could return home after the run, it was a different story for Charlotte and Becky who had to prepare for a further day of running.

The second day of their 272-mile journey across the country saw them run to Wirksworth in Derbyshire, with them expecting to cross the final finish line in Cranbrook, Kent on Saturday April 14, 10 days after their first run.

Sharron said: “What Becky and Charlotte are doing is absolutely fantastic, really inspirational.

“They’re doing a great job so keep going ladies, we’re all really proud of you!”

So far, an impressive £3,864 has been raised for Progeria Family Circle.
