In December 2013 grandad Ray Beldon, 57, suffered his first heart attack – but had three more while being treated. Within a few weeks he had undergone a triple heart bypass operation at Leeds General Infirmary.

After a nine-month recovery and return to work, Ray, from Chickenley, Dewsbury, took part in the Subway Helping Hearts Family 5K at Roundhay Park in Leeds.

Joined by his wife Margaret, son Chris, daughter Caroline, son-in-law Adam Longfield and his grandchildren Amiee, Samuel and Isabelle, he helped raise funds for for Yorkshire-based charity Heart Research UK.

Ray said: “The heart attack was a real shock because there were no previous symptoms and as a family we have always watched what we eat. It has in a way made me think differently about life. The family took part in the 5K last year and it was a lovely day, so I decided to join them this time even if I had to walk most of it.”

Ray works as a driver for Arriva Yorkshire from the Dewsbury depot.
