Good times had by all at Birstall summer fair

Organised by the Birstall Chamber of Trade, the event raised around £500, which is hoped to be shared out between Help for Heroes, the Royal British Legion and the Chamber itself.

Stalls were set up in the Market Place, competitions in baking and flower arranging were held and the Batley Bulldogs were on hand to provide games for youngsters on Saturday, August 16.

Pat Thornes, treasurer of the Chamber of Trade, said: “It was a big learning curve and there’s things we would do differently, but we had loads of good feedback.

“It was a very enjoyable day. I’m certain we will [be back next year]. It’s been very successful.”

Pam Rae won the flower arranging competition, which was judged by Batley’s Carl Wilde, a florist known nationally for his appearances on ITV’s This Morning.

Michelle Doolan won the adult cake competition and Katie Naylor came out on top in the junior contest. These were judged by Steve Bishop of the village’s Bishops Bakery.

Live music from Eric and the Viaduct and Thingymejig was also featured alongside face painting, teddy tombola, raffle, a magician and a treasure hunt – won by Molly Lawford.

Town crier Laurie Gilbert brought cheer to the village with his appearance too.
